Afropendium mark AFROPENDIUM JAZZ All Wings ↗

About This Collection

This is a curated hall of fame — one page per jazz legend, one definitive record each. No rankings, no completism, no comment section. Each page is composed like an album cover: a single color field, one black-and-white photograph, type set with conviction, and the record itself. Browsing by era, from Bebop to Contemporary, is meant to feel like flipping through a crate.

The Design

The visual language is a loving homage to the great mid-century jazz record covers — flat color, high-contrast photography, and typography doing the heavy lifting. This site is an independent editorial project by Afropendium and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Blue Note Records, any record label, or the estates of the artists featured.

The Photographs

Photography is sourced from public-domain archives — principally the William P. Gottlieb Collection at the Library of Congress, whose photographs of the golden age of jazz were dedicated to the public domain by the photographer himself — and from other clearly licensed sources. Every page credits its photograph in the liner notes. If you believe an image is used in error, contact us via afropendium.com and it will be addressed promptly.

The Music

Each page embeds one album via Spotify. Afropendium receives nothing from these embeds; they exist so you stop reading and start listening.
